Camp Savage is the previous site of a Military Intelligence Service language school which operated during the World War II. The language school was originally established in San Francisco but was moved into Savage, Minnesota in 1942. It taught Japanese language to the American military personnel which are necessary in translating captured documents and aid in the war efforts of Americans. Over 6,000 military personnel graduated from the school from 1942 to 1944. Camp Savage is also known to be the founding school of the Defense Language Institute. The military post closed in 1946 when the World War II ended.
